03/27/2015 Quick workout and an impromptu race Sunday

Have I mentioned I have an awesome wife, Maura DePersis?

First, I was limited on time today, so I ran a quick paced 25 minute workout.  I would say I ran about 3 miles.  It was better than nothing.

Second, this morning, a friend at work mentioned a local 5K her daughter was doing this Sunday.  I am always up for something local.  Plus, add in the fact that there is no soccer on Sunday due to the horrible field condition and you have the Perfect Scenario.  An open morning and a race that should last about 20 minutes.  All I needed to seal the deal, an awesome wife!  Of course she agreed and I am headed to the Rover and Clover 5K in Hillsdale, NJ.

To clarify, Maura would never say no, but I obviously like to include her in these decisions.  Also, I don't just go do races and come home.  Maura and the kids have never missed a race of mine and I always have them cheering me on, I always look forward to it as one of my favorite parts.    Finally, the last race I did, the temp was about 12 degrees, so I wasn't sure if the scar was too fresh.

Apparently not :)   I will fill you in with a race report on Sunday.

03/26/2015 Good and bad from tonight's workout

Almost me tonight!
The good news is that I got on the treadmill tonight and ran for the first time in about 8-9 days.  I just haven't felt good.  Although I still don't feel great, I am getting there and I felt good on the treadmill.

However, the bad is that about 15 minutes into the run, the #@&#($*#^@&#$($)##&@ treadmill broke and I almost went flying.  I was running about 8:30/mile pace at an incline set at 3% and I did feel great besides a little cramp in the side from dinner.  All of a sudden, the incline dropped all the way down and I almost lost it.  I couldn't adjust the incline after that and it was not stabilized one bit.  Consequently, tonight's workout was a glorious 15 minutes.

If anyone is looking to get rid of a treadmill, let me know!

03/24/2015 Starting to move past the sickness, stretching the legs

Well, I think I am getting better.  This virus/cold/sickness, whatever, that is affecting all of us at least a bit, may be moving on.  I feel physically a little better, definitely less irritated.  I just stretched the legs out a bit for a half hour walk and got the blood flowing.

I can actually fathom running again, so I must a least be a little better.  I hope to attempt a run either tonight on the treadmill (now that I can get to it again, damn furniture is finally gone), or tomorrow.  I know that I am chomping at the bit to get out and run.  I cannot wait to and want to start seeing some real gains.

I fully believe that anyone can run, depending on medical considerations of course.  It is important to let go of how fast or slow you think you are.   How you cannot possibly begin to think you could run even one mile, let alone 3 or 5 or 13.1 or 26.2.  It is important to remember that everyone is a beginner at some point and that with a little effort (sometimes a lot), you can get better.  You can find thousands of stories online and in print about people that didn't run and now are doing marathons or 5K's, whatever.  People who were like 400 lbs. that are down to whatever because they started running and eating better.  The key ingredients in all of those stories are determination, perseverance, goals, etc.

Go for a run today.  Even if it's your first ever or first in 30 years, know what it makes you?  A runner, plan and simple.  Then, repeat...

03/23/2015 I'm still here, just sick

Have no fear, I'm still here.  However, since last Tuesday, I have just not felt well.  It has run the gamut of sickness in my house from cough, to cold, to headache, to just not feeling good at all.  I am hoping tonight to get on the treadmill if I feel up to it, but we will see.

Luckily, nobody in the house is horribly sick, but I have definitely felt a lot better and I have no interest in doing anything right now.  I will keep you posted.
