NYC Marathon Lottery entered, now let's wait and see!

Well, it's official, I am entered into the lottery for the 2015 NYC Marathon on November 1st, 2015.  The
lottery application window is open until February 15th and afterwards, there will be 3 separate drawings done.  There will be a drawing that is done for NY Metro and surrounding area applicants.  There will be a drawing done for the rest of the United States applicants.  Finally, there will be a drawing done for the international pool.

Based on what I saw online the other day, I have roughly a 1 in 8 chance of being picked.  I guess it could be worse!  Keep your fingers crossed for me and good luck to any of you that are planning to enter as well.  I hope we all get in!

01/15/2015 A new year of The Daily Fitness Journal and a 7-7.25 mile run

Well, it's a new year and it's also a new year for The Daily Fitness Journal.  I have been doing this since this blog post started it all.  As I just read the post again, it made me smile.  First of all, I had like 15 grammatical mistakes.  Yikes!  I'll go back and fix those when I finish here.  Second, I think I have accomplished a lot of what I was thinking about when I wrote that post.  I certainly would like to continue to provide ongoing content that is of benefit.

Step one of doing this, my upcoming interview with a three sport athlete from The College of New Jersey, Allison Fournier.  I had a great time talking running with Allison and I hope the interview provides everyone involved with some takeaways.  Look for the interview post in the next couple days.

In addition to the start of doing some interviews here and there, I look forward to stepping up more product reviews and providing more training tips beyond the things I am personally doing.

As for today's workout, I ran for an hour again, but today I ran faster, about 7-7.25 miles.  The increase of speed felt good and I am happy to be building a strong base over this beginning of the new year.

01/13/2015 Afternoon jog for an hour, seriously sore hip flexors

Wow my hip flexors are tight and sore.  That class from Sunday is still hurting me.  I will say that after the jog, I feel a little more loose.  I'm hoping between that and maybe some advil, I will be good to go.  Also, pending on the temperature and my motivation, I am contemplating jumping on the stationary bike this evening for a quick spin to flush out the legs.  I'm not promising anything though as I continue to be a cold weather wuss.

On a side note, it is nice to see that my running seems to be bouncing back for me well.  I have done 5 runs in the last 9 days and already feel better.  Ramping up shouldn't be a problem moving forward towards my goals for the upcoming spring.

01/12/2015 6-6.5 miler in an hour, sore from class yesterday

Well, as expected, I am a bit sore from yesterday's performance class at Rise Fitness.  Luckily, it is a healthy sore and no glaring pains or issues.  Hey, you never know, I am 40 years old.

Today, a good 6-6.5 mile run stretches out the body and gets the heart rate going.  I find that the more I add in the variety of workouts like the class or the circuit I did last Wednesday, the more fresh I feel and less stale.  Yesterday kicked my ass, today I laced up and felt good doing a run.  A little variety keeps it moving and allows the body to stay healthier.

On a side note, the lottery for the NYC Marathon opens this week.  I am hoping I get in.  In addition to that and the Memorial Day Run, I need to pick a couple more events for the year.  I am hoping that 2015 is a big year of racing successfully for me.  My goal is to do 3-5 races and really do well in a couple and simply enjoy a couple as well.  Time to look up some race calendars.

01/11/2015 1 hour Performance Training at Rise Fitness

On the suggestion and invitation by my buddy Jason, I tried a Performance Training class this morning at Rise Fitness in Ho Ho Kus, New Jersey.  You can check out a video example of the class here.  Basically, led by the trainer Josiah, we worked non stop (we had 2 water breaks about 2 minutes each total) through a series of exercises that worked us head to toe.  The website description of the class is as follows:

"A total body workout blending: cardio, strength training, agility, balance, yoga, calisthenics, plyometrics, medicine ball, stability ball, ladder drills, JC bands, TRX, and more. This is a class for those who love to work hard, challenges themselves, looking to improve; there will be grunting. This is the most efficient, total body training."

I have to say I was wiped out at the end. It was an awesome, total body workout. It was a great way to supplement my running and get in a completely different hour of exercise. I did some cool exercises for the first time, tested myself in a variety of methods, and really exposed some flaws I need to work on. What else could I ask for?

Some other observations of Rise Fitness:

1.  Super clean place, full of great equipment.
2.  The trainer, Josiah, was knowledgeable and well-paced.
3.  A non intimidating atmosphere.

On the whole, it was a great class and I look forward to squeezing another in on my free trial week.  If you live in the area and go to the website, you can sign up online for a free week and take a couple classes.  Also, they have some promotional buys going on right now for the new year and offer a couple different ways to join from minimally to all in.  Give it a shot, if you can handle it!
