09/25/2015 A great day for the Franklin Lakes 1/2 Marathon

On a whim, and with a really nice wife, I jumped in the Franklin Lakes 1/2 Marathon this morning.  The soccer schedule was afternoon games today, so an 8am start time for the race made it possible.  A thanks to my buddy Mike Mainwald for reminding me of the race the other day or it would have passed me by without remembering it was this weekend.  Also, a quick thanks to my friend Len Randazzo, that jumped into the race as well after a bit of a hiatus from racing.  Both guys turned in good performances and it was a good day to run.

I got to the race around 7:20am and registered and immediately saw both friends and we waited around through a ribbon cutting ceremony to dedicate the new community center.  A bit after 8am, we got on the start and we were off.  I quickly settled into a comfortable pace and since I started near the front, I never had to deal with bumping, crowded early running, or any of the usual start time jockeying.

Below, I copied and pasted my mile split chart from my Nike Sportswatch.  I am really happy how the race went.  I was hoping to be sub-1:45:00 for the run and I never really felt uncomfortable with going under that from the first step.  As you can see below, the first 3 miles or so, I warmed up and shook out the legs.  Miles 4 and 5 I started to settle in.  I did my best work from miles 6 through 11.  As you can see, mile 12 and 13 were slower, but I kept it under 7:30/mile pace.  There was a tough hill on mile 12 and it kind of broke my rhythm.  I fell good until that hill.  It was really from there that I started to have to gut it out a bit.

Overall, I finished in 15th place out of around 200 people, 5th in my age group.  My overall gun time was 1:34:43.

For not running during the months of July and August basically, I couldn't have done any more.  Also, that brought my mileage total for the week to a healthy 34 miles.  Next week, I continue upward, heading to a couple more long runs before NYC.
