07/21/2015 Tidbits on my first run in 2 weeks and recovery

Today, I ran almost 4 miles at lunch.  It was my first run in 2 weeks.  I broke the 9th rib on my right side on Monday, July 6th.  The breathing has sucked and I have to shallow breath all the time or it hurts.  I do feel like in the last 2-3 days, I have noticed a little progress.  It hurts less in most situations.  During my run today, I made a few observations, both positive and negative.

First, on a positive note, it was great to be back running again.  I did miss it the last 2 weeks.  I feel better when I am running and I'm sure Maura would agree :)  Also, from the get go today, my legs felt great.  I don't expect that I lost any real fitness in only a 2 week break, but I did gain some rest for my leg muscles, joints, etc.  There was a definite, smooth flow to my running, especially at first.

The negatives start with having a constant tightness in my rib area from the first step of my run right through to the last step.  It was extremely tight the whole way.  I think it was a combination of the injury and me tightening up subconsciously to protect the area.  Also, I was forced to shallow breath the whole time.  This is super fun when running.  Also, it produced a cramp within the first 10 minutes.  I just kept moving one foot in front of the other though, happy to be running.

All in all, it was good to be running.  I think until I heal up a little more, I will stick to 4-5 mile runs.  It is about all I can handle with the breathing thing I think.  I am hoping to keep progressing and be 100% ASAP, maybe by the second week of August.
